Death record for Arthur Scott
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 13:28 BST (UK) »
Can any one help me locate date of death for Arthur Scott. He lived in the Oakland area of San Francisco and died sometime between 1970 and was definitely gone prior to August 1980.
His wife's name was Lulu, but do not know if that was short for Louise. She was alive in 1980 when we met her.
Arthur was born in New Zealand on 28 April 1890. he was an engineer and was something to do with Linear Acceleration during his later working years.

Great! Thanks RJ137. What is the best source of burial or cremation records for that area?

I don't think you're likely to find anything comprehensive for burial records there, but www.findagrave.com and http://www.usgwarchives.net/ca/alameda/cemeteries.html have some listings.  His last residence was Berkeley, California per the SSDI.  The Berkeley library has an obituary index - http://bancroft.berkeley-public.org/databases/obituaries/ - but unfortunately it doesn't cover 1975 yet.

Was his wife from New Zealand as well?  When did Arthur come to the US?

Lulu was Arthur's 2nd wife. Arthur married Florence Claire(Johnson) Horton in Aug. 1929. This was her 2nd marriage.

Florence married Kenneth Horton in 1910.

About 1911, he embarked on a two year "Educational Tour" worked for a while in London, but didn't like it, so on his way home, he stopped off at New York and was offered a job in the Chilean mines as an electrical engineer where he made a lot of money. Travelling from Chile to San Francisco, he met up with some compatriots and later a group of them bought a ship and were transporting goods that other people wouldn't touch (petrol and dynamite in the same hold). They went broke on their shipping adventure and he came back to NZ, but he couldn't settle and went back to San Francisco which was an area he favoured and where he could get  good job. For 40 years he worked in power generation which is where he designed the  start-up and testing procedure for the Mammoth Linear Accelerator south of San Francisco at Palo Alta. I have a hand beaten copper ashtray, that he made while working in Chile.  Don't know exactly when he settled in the US, but probably 1926.
He married twice. His first wife was Florence Horton, who was born in Washington. She died I think and he remarried the one we knew as Lulu. She was also American.

Thank you again RJ137, that will make some very interesting reading and fill in some of the gaps. I wonder who crossed out New Zealand and added Pacific Islands for Arthur and parents in the 1930 census. They had it right the first time :)

There are two possible entries in Ancestry.com for his second marriage. One is Olive L Merrill and the other Olive L Laine. dates are the same in both entries, also ages, marriage date the same. (19 sept. 1953),  but I am not a member of Ancestry, so can't get past the index.

Lulu is nickname for Louise.

Louise died in 1981.

SSDI: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JB3M-LYX

CA Death Index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPJG-MGL

This is Louise with her parents and brother Willis Horatio Merrill in the 1900 & 1910 census.

1900 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9GY-WGG

1910 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVG7-Q1P

====

Her brother Willis Horatio Merrill died in 1959.

CA Death Index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPWG-CMD

His obit mentions " a sister Louise Scott of Berkley".

Scroll down below the highlighted obit to the one for Willis H. Merrill. I had to use a work around to get to this page.

Obit: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01k1s/

From this it appears Lulu/Louise and Arthur must have married between 1953 & 1959.
