Applying for WW2 service records
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 15:45 BST (UK) »
Hopefully someone can clarify some information for me please.

I have downloaded the two forms I need to apply for my late father-in-law's service records.  He died in 1965.

I'm not too clear about the payment required - is it £30 once only or twice?

I only have one death certificate.  The form states that a copy is required so does that mean I can send a photocopy or will I need to buy another death cert. so that I don't send the original?

Advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

You only pay £30 once.

Send the death certificate, not a photocopy, they will return it to you.

It cost £30 and they will accept a photocopy of the original death Certificate. Be warned it takes forever, I had to wait nearly 5 months and then it was very hard to understand, so Good Luck with your application.

Thank you Jebber and Ellen for your replies.

I had gathered from other people enquiring that it does take a long time to get the records.  I'm interested to see what information will be on on the service records when I get them.

He was a Signalman in the Army and I think he may have been in Greece at some point.  Whether the records will confirm that or not, I shall have to wait and see.

I agree that the records can be a tad difficult for someone not versed in service jargon to interpret but I and others on here would be only too delighted to "translate" them for you!

Ellenmai - if yours are still puzzling you, send me a PM.

That's very kind of you Max I will do that. They did send a list of common abbreviations which did help a little, but quite a lot of the records are numbers not letters and still an puzzle  :-\

I sent a photocopy not the original d/c. I am just trying to remember if I had it certified by a JP but it was a while ago and I'm sorry I can't recall.

Time to process the application varies. At the end of last year people seemed to be receiving their service records in about 8 weeks. A few years ago I waited a year (almost to the day).
