I was looking in the famiysearch catalogue, planning to order a couple of films of church records, and was very surprised to find that many of them have been digitized and are available to view at all Mormon  Family History Centre.

Apparently so.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

It's may also be part of a grander plan to go digital, remove the physical films and, subject to contracts imposed by churches and record offices, to improve access for researchers.
