Where is this seaside bandstand?
« on: Friday 05 May 17 16:29 BST (UK) »
Hello, I recently went through a pile of old family photos.  I am trying to identify where these were taken.  It has been suggested that it is Bognor, but I am not convinced.  I am the leather-jacketed, bespectacled teenager (now 59!) in the picture. I have blanked out other family members, none of whom know where it is.  It is from between 1972, when I got the string tie, and 1975, when I left school and grew a moustache...

I have looked at every bandstand picture on the internet and Flickr and Street View.  The shingle and groynes on the beach are good, but I'm not sure.  Most people seem to take bandstand pictures with the sea behind.  I want to see the road.

Notice the sea-mine collection box and small folly building in the other photo.

It's been more fun than a pub quiz.

Thanks, Martin

Hi Martin,

Have you thought about contacting the Shipwrecked Mariners Society.  The red mines are used by them as charity collection boxes.  Currently they are doing a mine to mine challenge to raise money.

I am sure they would know the location.

Hi Martin,

The bandstand has clear characteristics like a two-tier roof and the shape of each tier and the relative sizes of each tier. I googled images on Bandstand + beach + UK. Looking at the results,  the bandstand at Bognor is the only one that matches these characteristics.

Hope this helps,

Mike

If it is at Bognor, then all the buildings in the background have been re-built since the photo was taken

You could contact

They will know if/when the Esplanade was redeveloped.

Many of these changes were in the 1970’s when many old original buildings were demolished.

Another view - buildings are the same, even the 'small folly' referred to in the original posting.

Here's an old map showing the bandstand as a small circle.

I think the buildings shown on the other side of the road are the ones in the photo and that they have all been swept away.

Here are the new apartments a little further along the Esplanade which you can see on Streetview.
