Granny and Grandad Kate and Jem Kavanagh in Dublin
« on: Friday 05 May 17 18:02 BST (UK) »
Hi guys,
I'm not sure anyone can help, but I can always ask. I love this photo of my grandparents (deceased), however, as it's sepia and not black and white it doesn't really suit the frame I have. Can anyone make it black and white AND possibly make it a little more vivid - it's very flat, the people in the background are nearly as defined as the grandfolks, whereas I'd like to see their outline a little better. Obviously I'm not sure if that is even possible.
Thanks in advance!

GUIDE FOR PHOTO RESTORATIONS PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SCANNER BED IS CLEAN AND SCAN AT A RESOLUTION OF 300-600 WITH THE SCALE AT 100% MINIMUM.

If you would like a coloured version, details such as hair colour , eyes and clothing etc.  if known  would be helpful to restorers

Regards Roy

I had a go too. I'm still learning about this stuff so for me it was more of an exercise than anything else. Here's the result anyway.

Cheers,

Mike

Looking at my 1st posted version, I noticed that the contrast between the 2 people and the background is too high. In this second version, I've darkened the background slightly so that the picture as a whole looks more natural.

Blurred background a bit to bring them out, another with slight heavier blur

Excellent work! Youve cleaned up the JPEG artifacts wonderfully. Nice smooth result without loosing any detail. Care to share (here or via PM) how you did this? I used my go-to noise filter but I didn't get anything like the quality in your photo. I'm still learning!
