Ainsworth KAVANAGH / CAVENAGH family of Ballinree, Carlow, Ireland
« on: Saturday 06 May 17 12:36 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any additional information on Ainsworth Kavanagh (c. 1803 – 1869) of Knocklonagad, Ballinree, Carlow Ireland, his siblings / parents / ancestors.

He was the son of a William Kavanagh (for whom I have no further information) and was a 'small farmer' and policeman.

He married Maria Doyle (1819 – 1900), daughter of Matthew Doyle, in 1855 and had the following children (and possibly others):
• Possibly Isabella (c. 1857 – 1889), address Ballinree
• Emily Maria (1864 – ?), address Boris
• Possibly William Charles (1860 – 1861), address Ballinree
• John (c. 1856 – ?) married Mary Ann Rigley in 1904, farmer at Knocklonagad
• Thomas (c. 1857 – ?) listed as an 'imbecile' on the 1901 census

He had a sister Isabella Kavanagh (c. 1808 – 1873), who married Joseph James (c. 1805 – c. 1845) in about 1832 and had the following children:
• Elizabeth (bap. 1833) Catholic baptism
• John (bap. 1835) Catholic baptism
• William (bap. 1837 – 1896) Catholic baptism
• Thomas (bap. 1839) Catholic baptism
• Isabella (bap. 1842) COI baptism, address Ballinree
• Joseph (bap. 1844) COI baptism, address Ballinree
And later married Timothy Cahill (c. 1810 – ?) of Ballinree in 1847, who fathered:
• Sarah Anne (1847 – ?)

There was a Johana Cavanagh who was a witness at Ainsworth's marriage, relationship unclear. Possibly mother or sister.

The name Ainsworth is uncommon, and was passed down to sister Isabella's grandson and great-grandson, so may have been Ainsworth's mother's or grandmother's surname.

Any further information would be greatly appreciated! Isabella, his sister, was my 3rd great grandmother and I would love to trace their parents.

Thanks, Jo

Look further down on James thread which may be of assistance.

hi 'rathmore' and barb

thanks for the suggestions...

barb, i have been through the JAMES threads, and have as much information as i can find there.

'rathmore', i have the information for Ainsworth KAVANAGH / CAVANAGH from familysearch.org regarding marriage, birth of daughter and death, as well as griffith's valuation / land – but am missing his birth record or information on his parents (other than that his father was a William KAVANAGH / CAVANAGH – there are a few possibilities) and any info. on other siblings... it would be particularly good to discover his mother's name.

kind regards, jo

hi barb

thanks for that.

yes, i had found that particular William KAVANAGH and his wife Anne. they baptised five (possibly six) children in Rathvilly between 1799 and 1810, but sadly no Ainsworth or Isabella among them. so, although they remain a possibility as parents of Ainsworth, i have no tangible link...

the search continues!

Hi Jo, My grandmother was Alice Kavanagh. Daughter of John and granddaughter of Ainsworth who lived at Kavanaghs cross Knockclonagad. The original home place is gone but I have photographs of it with family members from the 1920's. I live on the original 6 acre property now with my family. I believe Ainsworth came from the North of Ireland. At some point Cavenagh changed to kavanagh. Regards, Glenn.

Hi Glenn

Good to 'meet' you and thanks for the information!

I also came to the conclusion that the Ainsworth name may have come from the North – it seems very rare down south. Such a pity that the early records for Carlow are so scarce!

I would just love to see a photo of the place – (*) Moderator Comment: e-mail removed in accordance with RootsChat policy,to avoid spamming and other abuses.

I subsequently discovered that Isabella (c. 1857 – 1889), was an illegitimate daughter of Ainsworth's, but she seems to have had a close relationship, as your great-grandfather John was noted on her death record.

I'm based in South Africa, so doing all my research on the internet, which can be frustrating – I'm sure that if I had access to the church records I could dig up a lot more!

Regards, Jo
