Help finding right marriage in "Carmarthen" in 1868
« on: Sunday 07 May 17 08:27 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have finally found a marriage I have been looking for for ages. It is registered in Carmarthen rather than Llanelly as I was expecting. I am a member of Carm-FHS And they have excellent range of parish marriage images on their website. Therefore, I am hoping it is on the website somewhere, rather than having to order from the GRO, but which particular parish? The GRO marriage reference is Sept qtr 1868 for David Davies & Jane Aubrey Carmarthen vol 11a pg 932. I have been unable to positively identify David in the 1861 census, and therefore likely location in 1868, Jane was living in Brandyway, Cilcarw, llangendeirne. However, the marriage is not in the 1868 Llangendeirne parish register images. In 1871 they were living in Llannon, but the marriage is not Llannon parish register images either. Therefore any idea which parish register images I should concentrate on if it was registered under "Carmarthen"

Thank you

Could it have been a Register Office wedding?  If so then you would need to buy a copy of the certificate.

I suppose there could be this possibility. Jane would have been 17 when she got married, and depending on exact timings could have been pregnant with their first child Mary Ann, whose birth was register in Carmarthen in march quarter 1869 (11a 744). I don't know if it is of any significance, but this is the only marriage registered under Carmarthen 11a 932, whereas, when you normally search for marriages from this time period you get at least a couple of possible pairs who married. What do you think?

I had a quick look at some Carmarthen marriage registrations on FreeBMD and there are a few times when just 2 names are listed.

Looks like it was - nothing showing in Carmarthenshire marriages - only in the GRO index.

Have now got the certificate. The marriage was in Caersalem Independent Chapel, Pontyberem, so your theory was right

The marriage between David Davies and Jane Aubrey took place at Caeresalem on 12 Sep 1868. It has David Davies Farm Bailiff as his father and Daniel Aubrey Coal Miner deceased as Jane's father. Jane's age on the marriage certificate is given as 19, but she was in fact 17.
