Dorset button makers
« on: Sunday 07 May 17 10:18 BST (UK) »
I was researching the history of Dorset "buttony" and found that the industry crashed after the Great Exhibition, where a patented button making machine was displayed.

The article states that "Acute  distress  and  even starvation  came  to  the  Dorset button  makers;  from  the  Shaftesbury  district alone  350 families were shipped to  the colonies  at Government expense".

So if you have people who disappeared from Dorset this might be a line of enquiry you want to follow......

N.B. I do not have any Dorset connections.  :'(
