Trying to find Arthur Ellison
« on: Sunday 07 May 17 19:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to find Arthur Ellison in censuses before 1881. Lan opc has a burial for April 13th 1881 at All Saints' church. (I believe the census was on April 3rd.)

Thanks for any help.

Is this the death, making him born about 1829/30?

He died in the workhouse so you think he would have been there on census day, however there is only an Alfred Ellison aged 51 born Ince in Makerfield.

That's the problem. I think the burial entry could be a mistake. I know Alfred died between 1881 census and 26th July 1881 as I have a marriage for his wife, Jane for that date.

I was hoping to find out if Arthur actually existed, or if he was actually Alfred.

The 1881 Census has Alfred Elliuson down as a single man but then would the Workhouse Infirmary really be that aware of his marital status.Wife Jane is down as married but no husband with her.

It may be worthwhile ordering the death certificate to see what it says. It may not help at all but at least that would be one avenue explored so to speak.

Please can you tell me if you can find any census entries for Arthur Ellison, of same age as Arthur.

Lancs BMD entry also has death down as Arthur.

If it was a mistake, the same mistake was made on the death registration and the burial. Also if he died in April, his wife didn't wait long to remarry - just over 3 months!

There are no entries for an Arthur Ellison or spelling variations apart from one Born in Birstall Yorkshire and he was still alive in 1891.  I rather think Alfred was mistakenly recorded as Arthur on his death certificate and the name on the death certificate had to match the name of the person being buried.

Thanks Mosiefish,

That's what I wanted to know. I should add that Lancs BMD has no death reg. for Alfred Ellison in the years between 1877 and 1887, aprt fro 4 in 1883, but all the ages are wrong and only one died in Wigan. The name Alfred does not seem to have been common.

So I am inclined to think that Arthur is actually Alfred.

Thanks everyone else for your input.
