James Turner - Victualler/Innkeeper in Burton-Upon-Trent
« on: Tuesday 09 May 17 18:49 BST (UK) »
I am looking for more information about James Turner of Burton-Upon-Trent. He was born there in 1805, lived briefly in Nottingham in the 1840s where he was described as a licensed victualler in his son's birth record, before moving back to Burton. In the 1861 census he was listed as a "brewer's clerk" on Union Street, while in his probate records in 1868 he was described as an innkeeper, presumably still on Union Street. Is there any way to determine the name and nature of his business in Burton-Upon-Trent (or Nottingham)? If these are not public records does anyone have any suggestions on exactly where I might find them?

This is excellent! Thank you. And, so quick.

I did a quick search of this location and found a "friendly society" called "Welcome Stranger Lodge" associated with Union Inn as early as 1860. Does anyone have any insight on what this is?

Also, are there any suggested resources for finding pictures or other descriptions of the inn, if any still exist?

Thank you Cas. I saw that one, but it's a block away from Union Street and I wasn't certain. Is there any chance the streets were different back in the 1860s or would this still be considered Union Street, even if the location wasn't directly on Union Street? I'm also thinking it's possible subsequent owners kept the name but moved the location.

No idea, sorry..maybe another with local knowledge can help. Or try for local history forums in Staffs?

There appears to have been a Union Inn, 90, New Street but  I also came across a Union Tavern that was at 10, Union street so perhaps that one?

I don't know if this is relevant but in the 1940 Kelly's directory the next three public houses are shown:-
1. Inion Inn 90, New Street.
2. Inion Inn and Railway Tavern 59, Horninglow Street.
3. Union Tavern 10, Union Street.

Thank you PC99.

I subsequently found a reference online that showed that Union Inn on New Street was known as New Inn at around 1901. I suspect pub names came and went over the years, making tracing this all the more challenging. I also found references to other pubs owned by this same family further back in time. An in-depth study of Burton-Upon-Trent pubs was conducted by Graham Coxon and David Moore back in 2004, with some information being published at that time, so I'm going to look into that as well.

If any other readers of this have any additional insight or clues please let me know.
