A Flood Hatch is a framework of boards sliding in grooves, to be raised in time of flood; a sluice, floodgate. So it could be someone living near where these were installed.

A number of possibilities there Stan. Reference in Kelly's 1897 Directory to the springs to the east of the Cathedral and St Andrew's Well and the grant of a continuous supply of water to the inhabitants by Bishop Beckington, and the conduits running through the streets (still do), presumably from the moat around the Bishop's Palace, would have required some form of control.
There was also mention of a number of paper and corn mills in the town.
Sorry not too specific but may give a guide as to where to look.

Thank you both.  some Baptism records, give abode as Southover on some records, so the Moat, sprang to mind.

I have emailed the wells Museum, enquiring if there is a document or map, with street names on, that I can purchase, but haven't received a response.

I've come across LawPool Lane many times, a Bull Lane ( this morning ) and many others, I would love to know more about.

I have your links to the old Maps Stan.  So interesting.
How Wells and grown, since then.

The "Know your place" website has recently been extended from it original Bristol focus to cover Somerset. It allows you to locate streets etc on old and modern maps - although the Somerset section is not as detailed as yet.
