Reynolds Migrated to Canada - Looking for Parish
« on: Wednesday 10 May 17 04:10 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down the parish / village for my 3rd Great-Grandfather.  His name was James Reynolds, born in Ireland around 1799, married Elizabeth Campbell around 1825 and had a son Samuel born 1827 in Ireland.  They emigrated to Canada around 1830 and had a daughter Ann in 1832 (my 2nd great-grandmother) and a son James in 1836. They were Church of Ireland.

Does anyone have any information about this family that might help me determine the parish or village of origin?

Thanks for any help.

to get a minimum idea of where the Reynolds were living in Co Antrim

here is a poor list based upon the very incomplete Tithes Applotment Books 1823-1837
based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub
listing for each parish in Northern Ireland,
The relevant original books are in the
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast

Reynold, John   Townland: Ballykenver Year: 1832         Armoy   Antrim

Reynold, Archd. Townland: Ballynacree Beg Year: 1825      Ballymoney   Antrim

Reynolds, Wm.   Townland: Manister Year: 1827      Donegore    Antrim

Reynolds, Hu.   Townland: Drimnafivey Year: 1832         Loughguile    Antrim

That’s starting point I don’t view your next step happily, unless you have the luck of the irish and get a clue to narrow the field  to one parish.  many Church of Ireland records should go back to cover your dates but much perished in 1916-1923 period

see PRONI downloadable guide to church records see
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/Guide_to_church_records.pdf
Nevertheless someone might have your familyhistory already
or their emmigration got recorded
so lets hope others join in with you
Good luck

In the 1851 Census of Canada (actually taken in early 1852; ages given are as of next birthday), there is a William Reynolds, aged 60, a widower, living with James and Elizabeth in Brockville, Leeds County, Canada West (now Ontario).  This is likely James' brother.  Have you found burials for any of the family.  Tombstones often mentioned at least the county in Ireland they were from.

There is also a Samuel of the right age to be James' brother also in Brockville.  Wife's name is Francis, and it indicates they were born in 1819 (from the 1861 Census).

Samuel's house still stands in Brockville and it is indicated that he was in Brockville by about 1827:

after the Tithe records the next census substitute is Griffiths Valuation~1860s
showing 21 locations
so another way of looking at these records is to suggest that
of the tithes names, the following locations no longer had Reynolds recorded after1825
Reynolds, Mrs. Townland: Castle Crofts Year: 1825      Ballymoney   Antrim
Reynolds, Mrs. Townland: Leany Year: 1825         Ballymoney   Antrim
Reynolds, Mrs. Townland: Newhill Year: 1825         Ballymoney   Antrim

Reynolds, Willm.   Townland: Cozies Year: 1824      Billy   Antrim

Reynolds, Wm.   Townland: Knockavallon Year: 1827   Derrykeighan   Antrim
Reynolds, Wm.   Townland: Manister Year: 1827      Derrykeighan   Antrim

Reynolds, Wm.   Townland: Knockavallon Year: 1827   Donegore    Antrim
Reynolds, Wm.   Townland: Manister Year: 1827      Donegore    Antrim

The last four show a townland that was divided by two parishes
The interesting ones to me are the William who moved away or died or emmigrated

for a map of Co antrim parishes see http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim/maps/civil-parishes-of-county-antrim.php#.WRV_fFKZMwQ Donegore is a good distance from
the north coast, the others are in a cluster touching the north coast close

Thanks all

To eileenwilson, the Samuel Reynolds (wife Francis) is listed as a gentleman - my ancestors were laborers, ship's carpenters, joiners so I don't think they were the same family.  I haven't had any luck with grave records so will keep digging on that front.

All the best, Linda

In the 1851 Census, Samuel is noted as a merchant from which he obviously did well, but one of his sons became a ship's carpenter, so certainly the same type of work.  I should correct my last posting in that Samuel & Francis were married (not born) in 1819.  Also, you mention that James named his eldest son, Samuel -- so likely a family connection.

In 1836, Samuel and James were witnesses to a marriage:

http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/wsmart.htm

Dec. 8th.-Thomas Johnston and Mary Ann Reynolds, both of
Elizabethtown, license, witnesses Samuel Johnston and James Reynolds.

One of James & Elizabeth's sons:

http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/brockbap.htm

1836 February 15-James, born June 25, 1835, son of James and Elizabeth Reynolds, Brockville.

This may be their eldest daughter's marriage:

"On the 6th inst., by Rev. McMurray, Mr. John AGNEW to Margaret, eldest daughter of James REYNOLDS, Brockville."

James and Elizabeth are buried in Brockville Old Protestant Cemetery as are Samuel & Ann.  The records are available through the LDS:

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/37831?availability=Family%20History%20Library

or via interlibrary loan on microfilm in Ontario:

I'm a bit puzzled here-
I am trying to track down the parish / village for my 3rd Great-Grandfather.

Thanks for any help.

because your earlier topic says-

I've done some research that shows Reynolds families in Ballymully and Carrandarragh townlands in the Desertlyn parish in the 1831 census with first names James and Samuel. They were Church of Ireland.

Does anyone have any information about these families that would help determine if they might be the fit for my family in Canada?

Thanks for any help.

To aghadowey:

There wasn't much take-up on the Derry forum so I reposted on the Ireland forum so see if more information would be forthcoming.

Thus the two posts.

I have no real data to suggest that the Derry references were to my family except for the first name commonality.

Regards, Linda
