1850 Camberwell MMN Rook,

Suz.    John Hopkins was a leather cutter. The witnesses at Maria's marriage were Joseph Bradshaw and S (or L ?) Galer.

There is a Joseph Bradshaw on 1871 census who is the Beadle of the Parish of St Giles - so maybe Maria gave her age as "of full age" as she had no father around to give his consent

Suz
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England

Previous census show that Adolphus and his family were Cock, on 1861 they are shown as Coch, one forbear had the unusual name of Brooker Cock, but then this isn't really what you were asking for

Was there ever a leather cutter called John Hopkins?
Just throw this in -
Couple of Southwark workhouse admissions in 1856
Saint George´s Workhouse, Mint Street
admitted Wednesday 7 May 1856
Mary Hopkins, 32, widow, Seamstress
+ 2 children, Jno, 8, Maria, 4
destitute

A John Hopkins went to the Mitcham School on the 10th
Mary Hopkins and 2 children discharged on the 16th.

admitted Tuesday 27 May 1856
Mary Hopkins, 32, Widow, seamstress, pregnant
+ 2 children, John, 8, Maria, 4
destitute

On the 30th Maria Hopkins discharged to Lewisham School
John Hopkins sent to Mitcham School on the 10th

11th July 1856
Infant Hopkins (male) Born (to) Mary Hopkins

Mary Hopkins + 3 children discharged 8 August 1856

Register of Births in St George the Martyr Workhouse
11 July 1856
Male Hopkins
parents Mary and Unknown
Baptized as Benjaman (sic)

Benjamin Hopkins birth reg in Sep 1856 St Geo. Southwark. A dash for mother's maiden name!
Is he the Benjamin who died in Southwark in 1861? And was buried Victoria Park Cemetery, 9 January?
Where were his mother and her other two children in 1861?
If she had been married though, maybe George the tinman is a possiblity (has son John in 1851 census, and a daughter Maria baptized in 1852)

Pity we don't know the address of Mary  in 1861 at time of child's death, the only way would be to purchase the death cert of the little boy, BUT we don't know if this is the right family

Trying to tie them all in on 1861, no joy so far

My thoughts as well, Louisa. Pity Benjamin wasn't still alive at census time. But perhaps anyway they are among the missing in 1861, as little bits and pieces of that census have been lost.
I am still thinking Mary might have been the widow (if she was a widow) of George Hopkins, tinman. Theoretically then, Maria might not have known anything much about her father, and the details she gave on marriage were incorrect.
On the other hand, there's no maiden name for mum on Benjamin's birth reg on the new GRO index. Again, perhaps the workhouse master gave the info, and had no details.

May all be a red herring, of course, and the wrong Maria. But so far no sign of this leather cutter John Hopkins.
John

It is really frustrating though that we cannot find Mary John and Maria on 1861 and Mary and John on 1871
