Wonderful hunting ShaunJ ;D
I am yet to have a hunt around the records today.  I spent hours yesterday looking and didn't come across that.  Well done.

There is a Thomas Dowel 1841 Hospital Street Birmingham
HO107
Piece number   1141
Book number   12
Folio number   10
Page number   13

I can not make out occupation.  Interesting is a Richard Dowel living in the next household, he does have a brother named Richard born 1820 in Bitteswell.

Scrap the Richard part, he is alive and kicking in Bitteswell, also living with his brother Samuel.

Also after you saying about the Hidson marriage.  Henry Dowell brother of Thomas, he married Elizabeth Hidson in 1826, probably sister to Mary Hidson.
Henry's daughter was named Elizabeth Hidson Dowell in 1829.

Still can not see Thomas in 1841 anywhere.  I wonder if he was off shore at the time of the census?

Perhaps he was. If he was out of the country it could explain the 9 month delay in obtaining probate on an estate of less than £5.
