Abbreviation in RAF service record 1941/45
« on: Thursday 11 May 17 22:13 BST (UK) »
I have recently received the records of an  officer who was killed in January 1945. The last entry in the movements section of his record appears to be a blurred stamp possibly reading G.C.L. (1893  handwritten) DEATH PRESUMED.

Could someone please explain what the G. C. L means???

If you would please upload a picture of the relevant part of the records it could help us. Seeing the original document can make a difference. Thanks.

There's several RAF abreviation meanings online but I'm afraid I can't spot that one.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I have searched fairly widely. Here's a snipped section from the record

I'd guess that the C L stands for Casualty List.

Is the first letter an O ? Operational Casualty List 1893 ?

Thanks  ShaunJ

CL for casualty list seems  good to me.

I didn't think the first is an O but if a G Group Casualty List would sound likely.

All I need now is someone to tell me if such things existed!!!

I noticed in the left top corner of the picture "CC List 1668". The note against this is 'Missing'. I'm wondering if the lower print which we're discussing is perhaps the updated CC List numbered 1893 which now says 'presumed dead'.

Could CCL be Casualty Clearing List?

Interesting, I hadn't noticed the hand written CC List to which you refer to. The stamped one could be an update of this but as far as I know the crash was 21/22 January which date is given on both. Could there be two similar, say squadron and group list which came together on the service record some time after 22 January?

Would it be much of an imposition to ask you for a larger shot of the record to be posted up? There may be other clues which the experts here might pick up on for you.
