Thank you for your reply Annie.
Sarah married William WOODGATE in New Zealand on 28 March 1889 in Blenhiem, South Island. That is the certificate I have.
I have not been able to find any other Cummings in NZ that could be her parents or siblings. William was born in NZ.
Any information on Sarah's parents and/or siblings would be helpful.

This may possibly suggest that the parents didn't emigrate?

Have you looked for them on later census' or deaths if not on census'?

You can get an image of her birth certificate at modest cost at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This is a microfilm copy of the original register, which is in the care of the Registrar General for Scotland. It is not an original source held by the LDS.

Never, ever, trust anything you find on an online tree, especially if you have an original certificate that tells you a different story.

See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Do you have the death certificate for Sarah WOODGATE nee CUMMING. It would ask for "years in NZ" which would be useful.

Can you please list all the details on the 1889 marriage certificate that you have....details for bride, groom, witnesses, name the church, any addresses etc. etc.....everything.

Hi there  :)

The NZ thread that Annie has linked seems to have so much useful info for you on Sarah's life in NZ.

Just on the Scottish side:

Parents' marriage looks to be in 1861 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYQT-SFS

Scottish born children to and Rachel look to be:

Marion 1862 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ33-5B3 - may have died young?
Sarah 1864 - you have her details already.
Robert 1866 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7HP-KGQ - - may have died young?
Rachel 1868 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ8V-J4T - you have her on the 1871 census.

For background to this post, this is the 1871 census entry you mentioned https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRFR-YCQ

If you want to work back on Sarah's paternal and maternal lines, best to check the 1861 marriage entry on Scotlands People for her parents and then work back from that. Scottish marriage certs include parents' details for bride and groom.

Possible entry for Sarah in London, not too far from Battersea, in 1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QK65-DJXZ

I think mother Rachel must have died as there is this likely entry for the rest of the family in 1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q273-C7ZG

Monica

Added: Possible death entry for a Rachel Cummings, aged 32 in Wandsworth in the 3rd Qrt of 1872 (ref vol 1d/pg 355). Also a marriage entry for a Margaret Mary Tiley and Robert Cumming in Chelsea in 2nd Qrt 1876 (ref vol 1a/pg 543).
