From Clyde at Havre?
« on: Friday 12 May 17 07:49 BST (UK) »
Having been unable to find the death records of my ancestors, John and Sarah Jackson (nee McMillan) in Scottish records, I believe I have found mention of them in the Glasgow Herald of 1857 under the Shipping Intelligence list.   The information simply reads:

'John and Sarah, Jackson, from Clyde at Havre, 18th inst.'

Just wondering if anyone can please confirm whether this means they arrived at Havre on the 18th from Clyde?  (As yet I have been unable to find any immigration record of them elsewhere). Also, I am not sure which Havre this is as I believe there was Le Havre in France and Havre in Montana, USA.  Would there be reason to immigrate or travel to either in 1857 other than for a new opportunity?

Thanks,
Andrea

Think you are reading the record incorrectly-

'John and Sarah [name of ship], Jackson [surname of Captain], from Clyde [arrived] at Havre, 18th inst.'

'Havre' is likely La Havre, France not Havre, Montana (not a port city)

If you filter newspaper search to Glasgow Herald & 1857 then search for Jackson (surname) and Havre there are about 6 results on different dates.

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for your advice, your interpretation makes much more sense.
Back to the drawing board!
