Restore a bad restoration of Manuela Morey?
« on: Friday 12 May 17 19:40 BST (UK) »
I have been sent this poor restoration of a now lost picture.  Could anyone make this lady look less scary while being faithful to the original?  (B&W please, no colour)

Many thanks
Philip

I've tried to keep it subtle!

A difficult one, when we can't see the original, but I've given it a try

Added a bit of grain for texture and some shading/drop shadow to get some depth in it. Pushed her lip and brow up a bit in hopes to seem less scary. Pulled her left cheek bone out  and chin/neck line in to get some facial features back  though she now looks unimpressed by something she is looking at. They are very subtle, the changes, but I'm not sure if they allow it to qualify as remaining true to the original.
If a task is once begun never leave it till it's done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.

Oh you lovely, lovely people.

The "restoration" I gave you looked as though it had been clipped from a poor copy and had a black background added in an attempt to make the face stand out.  What you have given me is a super selection of images to give a human face to this beloved ancestor.

Many thanks to all of you.

Philip
