Suzilad, could this be mother Helen in 1851 - everyone showing as born in South Leith:

Helen Riddle 51 fishwoman
Margt Harper 30 visitor
Ratchl Harper 26 visitor
Margt Brodie 3 granddaughter

Address: 72 St Andrews St, Leith

1841 show a Helen Riddle, 40, Pauper Outdoor Work b. Midlothian. The address given is Giles Street South Leith. She is the only one showing on the listing.

If this is Helen Wood, likely widowed by now and the children out working?

For George Jnr, the closest I can see is a 13yr George Riddle showing as a prisoner at Gaol & Bridewell, Greenside, Edinburgh. By 1851 George was married wasn't he?

Just as a note. There can't have been that many chimney sweeps by the name of Riddle! There is this entry from 1841:

John Riddle 40 Chimney Sweeper b. Outside Census County
Jane Riddle
George Riddle
Margaret Riddle

Address: 33 Brunswick Street, St Cuthbert's Edinburgh

Wondering if John Riddle was related to George Riddle, husband of Helen Wood?

Thank you Monica

My thoughts to when I saw your information can't be many Riddle chimney sweeps.

George was living in 1851 with his wife Helen Greenfield and his mother in law but where his sisters are I have no idea .

I thought there might be a lead on either of the girls with the Margaret Brodie aged 3 showing as granddaughter in the 1851 census entry. Have struggled to find anything further though  :-\

I have to Monica but not getting anywhere .

On George and Helen's marriage in OPR's  all it says

is he is a workman from Leith and she is the daughter of a seaman William Wood (deceased).

Thought Margaret might be Helen's daughter named after her sister Margaret but nothing .
