83rd Foot Regiment
« on: Sunday 14 May 17 09:33 BST (UK) »
My ancestor served with the 83rd Foot Regiment, initially 63rd Brigade, and later the Royal Irish Rifles, between 1877 and 1883.

His record shows that he was present at these locations:

- 12/01/1878 to 14/01/1881 - India
- 15/01/1881 to 03/01/1882 - South Africa

Can anyone help me to determine where in these countries he may have been and what the campaigns were, the latter I know being the end of the First Boer War.

The Wikipedia article mentioned above has a link to a 1908 book about the regiment, but the following book seems to have more detail (see page 317 onwards):

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015033363170;view=1up;seq=453

(Following page 316 there is an interesting photograph of a whip used by the regiment until 1879 - I wouldn't like to have been on the receiving end!)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Would his start date to calculate period served abroad in India be based on embarkation date - or arrival?

You have provided a start date of "12 Jan 1878". The troopship H.M.S Crocodile sailed Sunday 13th Jan 1878 for Bombay carrying, amongst many, a " ... Lieut. Davenport and 20 rank and file of the 83th Foot ..." who had left Farnborough the previous Monday for Portsmouth.

Wondered if your ancestor could have been one of the rank and file or even the Lieut?

P.S - the "Crocodile" arrived Bombay Feb 14

The second set of dates coincide firstly exactly with the departure from India  of HMS Crocodile on 15 Jan 1881 carrying the regiment to South Africa (page 79 of the  Memoirs) and secondly the arrival of HMS Tamar at Portsmouth on 3 Jan 1882 when it returned the regiment from South Africa to UK (page 80).

As the regiment had been in India since 1870, hanes teulu's proposal makes eminent sense.

Naval & Military Gazette, 12 Jan 1881,
" ... 83rd Foot - the regiment, which was awaiting early embarkation for home, has been placed under orders for South Africa"

Homeward Mail from India, China and the East, 26 Jan 1881
" ... the 83rd regiment will be conveyed by the Crocodile, which is ordered to sail  from Bombay on the 14th inst".

The regiment was at Belgaum prior to this.
