Help to Identify Uniform
« on: Monday 15 May 17 00:05 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters!

I've recently acquired some pictures of my Grandfather. Apparently, he served in India during WW2 but my knowledge of what went on in that part of the world at that time is next to nothing!

Can anyone help identify his uniform and give an indication of what he might have been up to in India at the time?

I can't help with the uniform, but as far as I know there were two main problems facing the British forces in India during WW2.  The first was the risk of civil unrest (from the pro-Independence movements) and the second was the risk of a Japanese invasion through Burma.

Hope this helps.

Would you have any other pictures of him in his uniform which you could post up for us? The one above is a nice one of him, but unfortunately the detailing on the buttons, the cap badge itself and the "something" on his left epaulette are too indistinct for me to help out.

The "something" on the epaulette *could* say 56 or HG, but it's a pure guess.

Good Morning, I've got a couple more pictures of him while he was away serving. Nothing that is too 'identifying' but here we go.

I'd love to know what the chap in the head-dress and amazing feet is all about if anybody knows!

I'd also like to know how I can re-size the image to a smaller version as well! Apologies it's so big!

The man in the head dress is a zulu rickshaw driver. Looks like this was taken in South Africa perhaps on his way to India.

I agree with John915, an artilleryman serving with an Indian Army unit.  He has Lance Sergeant's stripes in the last picture.  Many, if not all, Indian Army artillery units had British officers and NCOs.  The major campaign of the army in India was the Burma campaign, lots to find on the net about that.

You may wish to apply for his records which will give you much more information.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
