Look up please Northants1841
« on: Monday 15 May 17 02:25 BST (UK) »
HI there
Am looking for marriage/s of SPICERs in Cogenhoe around 1570 - John and possibly Jone/Joane. Saw Northants841 listed this parish

Would be great if that is possible
Thank you
Meegan

The Northants1841 site is now at http://www.familyhistorynorthants.co.uk/

But those Baptism indexes don't go back as far as 1570.

However, the Northants PRs are now on Anc***

And this is showing several children for a John:
An, bap 1574, Elizabeth bap 1576, Letice bap 1580 and Mary bap 1590, Patience 1591, Linewell(?!) (fem) 1592 and Tobias 1594. John is described as "Clerk".

There may be others, the indexing is not always great on Anc***

No marriage indexed in Cogenhoe.

Meegan ... go to Anc again and browse the Northamptonshire Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1532-1812, for Cogenhoe.
Page 10 of 40 shows a margin entry for Joanne Spicer 1572, and at the bottom of the same page is a bpt of one of John Spicer's children, followed by the signature "John Spicer minister" as the last line.
A closer look may find more Spicers ... the writing does not lend itself to accurate transcription by Anc.

Thanks very much, sugarbakers. I assume the writing is done by her father, the minister, so can blame him!

Have no idea what the Latin means - have tried on online translation but might ask someone on RootsChat for translation

Thanks for finding it for me although it doesn't seem to be a marriage to John but will wait and see
Cheers

Hi again sugarbakers
A quick reply to the Latin translation below - interesting as it is still need a bit more trolling through those PRs! I hadn't realised you could search the individual parishes by selction as you have shown me so thank you for that

Cheers
Meegan

Joanne Spice-
ro artium ma-
gistro Rectore

= by John Spicer, Master of Arts, Rector

Joanne is not a female name but the ablative case of Joannes (meaning ‘by John’), indicating that these baptisms were performed by him.
