There is a Thomas Clean mentioned in the Freemen and Apprentices of York records: for the year 1739/40 as a Freeman of York and that he was an Innholder.

He also appears as an innholder of the Naggs Head Inn in the parish of St Sampsons in a lease dated 1748 along with a William Clean ( a wine cooper and is named as the devisee under Thomas Cleans last Will and Testament - all info from the lease ) possible brother perhaps ?

Interestingly there are records for other Cleans in York at this time.

John Clean Innholder 1740
John Clean shoemakers apprentice 1733
Joseph Clean - 1739/40 Shoemaker  showing up in the Freemen and Apprentice records too
Will Clean - wine coopers apprentice 1742 to Thomas Silbury.

*****

They also married by licence, only info from this is that they were both aged 30 , as this is only a transcription it could possibly mean 30 +, some actual licences state for example '20 years and upwards' - so they could both be older.

There is also a burial of a Jane Clean 5 June 1762 at York, St Martin, Coney Street.

No indication if this was an adult burial or if a child :-\

Thos Clean, Innholder buried 24 October 1744, St Sampson York.

He also left a Will, available from the Borthwick (via F M P)

EDIT- the only baptism I can see is in Riccall, south of York.

Thomas Bapt. 2nd May 1703 - son of John.

I can't see any children for Thomas and Jane.

Thanks for the info.....it's more than I had. I think that shoemakers were fairly common in those days, It was a long shot but I was hoping to find a link to a Thomas Clean who was a shoemaker from village of Ness, his son William being my 3x Great grandfather, christened in Hovingham 1770.
I had already picked up on the 'Clean ' family in Riccall....the ages may fit, and he was also a shoemaker, but I am missing the possible link (if there is one) between Riccall, York and Ness.

   Thanks again, Brian
