Help me find a missing ancestor in 1851!
« on: Monday 15 May 17 23:36 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Abigail Park was baptised in St George's, Doncaster, on 21 Aug 1831.

I find her on the 1841 census in Nutwell, Armthorpe.

And in 1861 in Auckley, married to George Garnett.

But I cannot find her in 1851! Can anyone help, please? I'd be very grateful.

For reference - Marriage was December qtr 1851 so she should be Park on 1851 census

Thank you, yes, that is true. I can't find her under Park.

A small part of the Yorkshire 1851 is missing.  I don't know Yorkshire well enough to say if that's why you can't find her but you will find the areas missing listed here

I don't think this is the answer. In another family I have found a Susannah transcribed as Hannah - it must be something like this...

You may have been mistranscribed as Mary Park, 19, b Doncaster, a servant in Doncaster; there is no obvious Mary Park matching this person in 1841.

as the rest of the family are there in 1851 I would guess she is living elsewhere.

Can't find an appropriate George either

From past experience with short, seemingly easy to spot surnames like Park and in my case Briggs, Hill and Hirst, I would recommend looking for possible mis- transcriptions.
Briggs has been Buggs, Brig, Baggs, Bridge and (!!) Prida. Hill was Hell, Hem etc.
Try just searching for the Christian name with birth date and places and see what you come up with. Or imagine alternative renderings of Park: Perk, Sark, Parl etc.
By the way, if anyone can find my Jonathan Briggs ( b. Elland abt 1837) in the census 1851, I'd be very grateful.
