There would be an attestation form when he first signed up. I once tried paying a military researcher to access a similar case but ended up not finding it. With improved description of files it may be easier now to locate the batch you need.

Hi everyone
I have had a reply from the Catholic diocese office which says: "A search on our Sacramental database found a record in the name of John SANDFORD, dated 21 June 1869 with the following entered in the comments column - 'Baptism date from Notice of Marriage. Married Maria SWEENEY in St Josephs, Wellington, date not entered'. ...John's baptismal record has no date of birth, parent's name or sponsors' names."
Mary Sweeney married this John Sandford and is the mother of another John Sandford (born 1904). Mary Sweeney and John Sandford apparently told everyone they were married in 1899 but they were not actually married until 1911 in Wellington.

Hi Carolyn,

Do you have either John's 1863 marriage certificate or his 1883 death certificate, whose purchase was suggested by Minniehaha? The former document will give you his occupation and the latter might provide his parents names and his father's occupation (though I'm not confident).

I have both his death printout and the death certificate but unfortunately they both show his parents in the UK are not recorded. The marriage certificate shows Esther Ryan and John Sandford marrying at the Primitive Methodist Church in Edwardes St which is now Airedale St in Auckland.  The certificate does not list any of their parents and only shows the date, 20 June 1863.

This is the wrong John San(d)ford unfortunately. I have John Squires Sanford's birth certificate from the 1950s when my father was researching. 

The Dorset PRs are on Ancestry. As well as John baptised at Bridport in 1839 there were a number of other children. Do any of these names repeat in John and Esther's children. Joseph Sanford married Ann Squires at Bridport in 1836.
