Name variant
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 10:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone can tell what the modern equivalent of the name Johan is? In Wybunbury, Cheshire in the 1500s I found many examples of this name:

1590 Aug 5 Johan wife of John Dale, buried

I thought the name might be a variant of Joan or perhaps Jane, but looking at the register I found the name 'Jane' many times but only one example of Joan spelt with a letter 'e' which made think it might be Joan.

1590 Sept 6 Lady Jane wife of Sir Lawrence Smith, buried

1590 Sept 13 Joane daughter of John Twiss, christened

In the same parish register in the early 1600s I couldn't see a Johan but there were many Joans

At this date, the spelling Johan is commonly found for Joan, especially in northern counties.

Seems unlikely in the 1590s. Do you have examples?

ADDED - A quick look on FindMyPast finds plenty at that period. Thanks for pointing it out.
