Ann Stockton marriage 1878
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 10:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out information about Ann, the wife and subsequent widow of Robert William Stockton of Hull. I think that having been recorded as a widow in the 1861 census in Hull and in Sculcoates in the 1871 census, she may have married Alfred Clayton in 1878. However there is only the General Registry Index record and no church record. Has anyone come across the church record of this marriage? I ask because I do not know her maiden name and the marriage record would record this and her status as a widow at the time of the marriage.
Her former husband Robert William Stockton was a soldier in the 63rd Regiment but apart from two worldwide army index records in 1841 & 1851 I can trace nothing of his record, marriage to ann or the birth of his son also named Robert William Stockton ( a person of this name born in 1849 is of another family ) born around 1850-55.
If anyone could help I would be most grateful.
many thanks
John

Is the son Robert William Stockton the one married to an Ann with 4 children in 1881 - a brick layer born Hull 1853?

If so, could he be the one registered as William Stockton born Hull Dec quarter 1854 Hull. Volume 09D page 159? His mother's maiden name was Wolsham.

Dear John,

According to Yorkshire BMD website the 1878 marriage took place at "Hull Register Offices or Registrar Attended".  If it was the Register Office the only way to find out the details would be to order a copy of the certificate I'm afraid.

Many thanks to you both,

I have decided to order the marriage cert as, Pinetree, you suggested as this will not only verify her maiden name but also confirm, or not, whether the William Stockton birth groom suggested is also correct.

John

Did you manage to get back any further with RW's parents Robert and Ann?

There seems to be only one candidate for Robert - he was away with his regiment in both 1841 and 1851 so doesn't appear on a proper census with age/birthplace.

As to Ann, she appears to have 'married' twice although no record of either!!   First to an Edward Parkin with whom she had a son Charles bp.15/4/1844 Hull and then to Robert Stockton with whom she had Robert William ca.1852/3 Hull.   Sadly, not only is there no trace of a marriage to either man, neither of her 2 sons seem to have had their births registered so can't even get Ann's maiden name from the new GRO index.

Possible for Ann Stockton and son Charles Parkin.

1851 census 6 Witherwick Yard, Spencer Street Hull
Mary Lydeman 75, head  born Leeds
Ann "Stockdale" 22, daughter Married born Hull
Mary Postlethwaite grand daughter 11 born Hull poss 16
Charles Parkin grandson age 2 born Hull listed as a scholar so I think it should be a 6 not a 2 for age.

GRO new index of births
Charles Parkin Lideman registered Hull 1844 M Quarter Volume 22 page 440
