The "closed" system where every App operates in its own little world can be very frustrating at times but it is extremely secure. Probably the biggest danger to an iPad would come if Apple ever screw up one of their constant updates for the system. (as many found out going from ios 9 to ios 10  :-X )

It says I am up to date iOS 9.3.5. When do I get to 10 if not released to me yet ?

Just realised what a silly question, when Apple update silly!

Thank you for the knowledge, appreciated :)

Updating depends on the iPad you have - my latest one is on ios 10.3 but my "older" one still operates on v 9.

If you want to check go to settings, general software update and it should tell you if an update is available .........  ::) just re read your post and realised that is probably what you have already done.
