Ionian Islands 1860s - help needed
« on: Wednesday 17 May 17 00:40 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking to research one branch of my family and have came across one family comp that seems to have travelled around between 1850 and 1870 with three children born in Ionian Islands, India and Suez.

I can only assume that the father, John Dailey was in the military and these were his postings with his wife Margaret (McNamee).

The first of the children born overseas was my Great-Great Grandmother MARY DAILEY who is noted on a later census in Glasgow as being born around 1861 in Kefalonia, Ionian Islands.

I have found a couple of sites with both civil and military births in Ionian Islands but cannot find an entry for her... any ideas where to go next??

Many thanks

I also find no record for her in on line sources I have tried.  The original record should be with the GRO.  An initial telephone call asking for advice may be worth doing, I have found them exceptionally helpful.

In 1861 the 2nd Battalion 9th Regiment of Foot was stationed in Kefalonia, was this the regiment?

Hi Max

Thanks for the reply. That is part of the problem. The only information we have so far is that John was born in Ireland and given the variations of the surname and how common it is we can't determine any other info beyond Glasgow, including regiment, however if that is the one that was stationed there around that time thats a great help thanks!

Do you have the birth dates of the India and Suez births? A check on regiments stationed in those three places at the relevant dates may take us one step further.

The depot companies of the 9th were stationed in Limerick by the way in 1861. We could check his birth date also.

Seemed a good idea but I can't link any particular regiment to those places/times with any certainty.  I should also say that the army lists only give the major units in a location so, for example, the garrison in Kefalonia in 1861 would have other individuals or small detachments from other regiments so we can't be certain that he was in the 9th Foot.

I can't help feeling that there are GRO records that are not on line so I fall back on advising a telephone call.

A bit negative I'm afraid.

Any advice or confirmation in any way isn't negative so thanks for your advice and time  :)

I'll give them a call and see what they can advise. Just another mystery in the world of family trees. Ta much. Paul.
