3 castle alley street, whitechapel
« on: Wednesday 17 May 17 13:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate where number 3 castle alley street in whitechapel was  in 1851

I did look on an old map but can't see number 3, the nearest number i can find to number 3 is number 16 then it jumps to high numbers .  I was wondering if it could be calcutta house but again I  cannot find any information to it being  flats at one point.

thanks for reading this post,

G

Keep in mind that numbering may have changed since 1851, so No 3 now may not be the same house that your ancestor lived in ... in fact there has been so much development in the area over the decades that it is quite likely that the area today bears little or no resemblance to how it looked in 1851.

Was the address from the 1851 census? If so could you please give the person's name and any identifying or reference details as there may be a way to narrow down the location of No 3 in 1851.

Are you sure of the address? There is a Castle Alley and a Castle Street but I can't see a Castle Alley Street.

Thanks for the PM graduation, but it might be better if you posted those names on your thread so others can help too.

Also there are quite a few hundred possible candidates so some first names and years of birth might help narrow down the correct families.

No - Old Castle Street was formerly Castle Alley, not Castle Alley Street.

The address 3 Castle Alley has come up on Rootschat before:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=434637.0

In the 1851 census there are two entries for 3 Castle Alley Whitechapel, both in piece 1545. On page 23 there are 4 households (Morison, Levy, Myers, Levy) at number 3 Castle Alley. On page 16 there are 3 more  listed at 3 Castle Alley but this could an enumerators mistranscription of Castle Street as the next house is 4 Castle Street.
