Philip Walter Peeke is my great uncle and I have details of his birth and marriage.

I know that he joined the Navy as a boy in 1871 and have documentation to show this.  However, this documentation also shows that in 1876 he 'ran away' from his ship while in Table Bay - and that is the last trace I can find of him.

He was married to a Mary Jane Northcott and had a daughter Amelia - Amelia died in 1886.  According to the 1881 census Mary Jane was using the surname Peeke, however, in the 1891 census she had reverted to the surname of Northcott and in 1893 she married James Henry Peeke.  James Henry is my great grandfather - the brother of Philip Walter.

Any help anyone can give would be gratefully received.

Elly

Is he the same James Henry Peeke who marries (again) in 1894 Plymouth?

There is a family tree for him with 2 wives (first one 1883) but no mention of a marriage to Mary Jane in between.

Tree has Mary Jane dying in 1893 so that would leave him free to marry again in 1894 if correct.

Hi

Yes I do have the marriage certificate for Mary Jane Northcott and James Henry Peeke.

James Henry had already been married and is given as a widower - and Mary Jane is listed as a spinster.

I am 100% positive that they are the correct people - parents are the same and the witnesses are some of my other relatives.

I also have the death certificate for Mary Jane and it from this that I noticed that her husband was listed as James Henry when I had expected to see Philip Walter..... I knew my great grandfather had two wives this now makes three !!!

Regards

Elly

I can’t find a death for Phillip  ???

This might help is you want to pursue the above 1881 Asylum entry further to see if it is the Philip Peek you are looking for

A snippet from this link http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/forewords/D069.pdf

no personal details in the returns, once the admission date is known, it is easy enough to find a patient in the admission registers, 3769A/H3, and papers, 3769A/H2, from Exminster Hospital, deposited at the Devon Record Office.

…………it is possible to discover information on a patient’s age, religion, address and next of kin and details of their illness, its supposed cause, duration and treatment.

I don’t know if there’ll be a charge for checking the information

.... I knew my great grandfather had two wives this now makes three !!!

Are these the three marriages for James Henry?

1883 he married Clara Ann Henley
Mar 1892 Clara Ann Peek died age 30

Mar 1893 he married Mary Jane Northcott (wife of his brother Philip Walter)
Sep  1893 Mary J Peek died age 40

Dec 1894 he married Frances Reed
Jun 1914 Frances Peek died age 36

They were all so young  :(

For info. - it appears Clara was a patient in Exminster in 1891

Thank you for all your help.

I will definitely look at the entry for the Asylum....  could well be him.

And, yes three wives at the moment and yes I have a family tree on Ancestry which shows two wives - will now change this to three...
