US Naturalization file after 1945 in Pennsylvania
« on: Wednesday 17 May 17 15:45 BST (UK) »
I am helping a friend out. How can she apply for her grandmother's US Naturalization file? Her grandmother died in 2003. The naturalization happened after 1945 likely in Pennsylvania. My friend has no idea when her grandmother came to the United States. Her father was born 1952 in Pennsylvania. Her grandmother was in a concentration camp and came to the USA after WWII. She married a US veteran before 1952. My friend thinks her grandmother married in Pennsylvania. Thank you for your help.

If she came after WWII, she wouldn't be in the 1940 census.

It might help to narrow it down to what town/county her mother lived in.  Some Pennsylvania naturalization records are on subscription sites like Ancestry.com and Fold 3.  (If she's in the US, she might want to check if her local library gives access to any of these sites.)  There are also some naturalization records indexes for Pennsylvania counties - http://www.germanroots.com/pennsylvania.html

There are also links to some Pennsylvania marriages here - http://www.genealogybranches.com/pennsylvania.html

Many passenger lists can be found on www.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com.

There is more information about naturalization records at the National Archives here - https://www.archives.gov/research/naturalization#toc--where-can-i-find-naturalization-records-

A family friend came from a concentration camp to an uncle in America through efforts of the Red Cross. She arrived by ship in New York and then went to stay with her relatives. Perhaps your friend's grandmother also arrived in N.Y. (Ancestry, a subscription site, should show N.Y. arrivals).

If the grandmother was in a concentration camp it's quite possible that other members of her family were also in a camp but didn't survive. If that's the case she (or another relative) may have added them to the database of Holocaust victims on this site- heartbreaking to read but often lots of information on where the family came from, etc.

If you were not already familiar with www.familysearch.org, you can look up her name there and if she has a naturalization file it will show up as one of the results, and either on the photo of the index card or on the webpage it will mention the name of the district court where the file is located.  More information about how to order the file should appear somewhere on the webpage or near the title of the database.  You probably can write a letter to the district court and ask them how to order the file.

This may give an indication of where your ancestors died.
