Am I right in understanding that you are seeking help to identify the parents of Charles Henry Clarke whose birth was registered in Macclesfield, Jun qtr 1867 (and who later married Sarah Ann)?

I see that the GRO index unfortunately does not list a mother's maiden name against his birth registration (which may suggest he was born out of wedlock).

CheshireBMD adds the detail that his birth was registered in West Macclesfield subdistrict.

Do you have his father's name from the marriage certificate? You've said "dad James" - is this believed to be Charles' father?

OK I now see that no father's details were entered for Charles when he married Sarah Ann Layland at St George's, Sutton on 13 March 1887.  It is looking all the more likely that he was born out of wedlock.

I see also that the witnesses were Charles Henry Hulme and Mary Ann Hulme - have they been traced?

I see also that the witnesses were Charles Henry Hulme and Mary Ann Hulme - have they been traced?

The witnesses look likely to be siblings, two of the children of Thomas and Martha Hulme of Sutton.

Mary Ann Hulme born Wincle 1852
Charles Henry Hulme born Sutton 1865

Suggest you get the birth certificate to find out the name of his Mother.

Added:

Are you claiming these as his parents?
'Mum Mary or Margaret dad James. '

'Mum Mary or Margaret dad James. '

May be a reference to the baptism of Charles Henry Clark, 12 June 1867, Macclesfield St Michael.
Perhaps there was some creativity with the facts there.

1871 census, Macclesfield, has Charles Clarke, 3, with grandparents Joseph + Maria. There is a daughter Margaret in the household.

Ancestry has him as age 13 in 1871, which was why I could not find him.
