SSDI - Social security Death Index usually gives the SSN number.

Any chance of this exact date of birth ? - might be worth a few credits on Scotland's People to find out.

What was the reference you talked of - "but I cannot trace her further in the US, apart from a random entry in a Californian gazette"

Probably no relation (incorrect place of birth) but adding it anyway:

Interested in that reference in California Gazette in earlier post Lisa ?  interesting the similarity in the addresses

That particular Catherine Ryan (referred to above) appears to have married Timothy Michael O'Mailley.
Timothy O'Mailley was on the Andania - 27 July 1929 - going to friend Mrs Ellen Kelly 322 Donald Avenue, Toronto. Ontario. Brother Patrick O'Mailley Stonefield Road. Blantyre.
This Catherine was born 5 November 1908 Kirkcaldy Fife. Could have passed away 1938 Hamilton Ontario (according to anc tree)
Parents listed as Alexander Ryan (1872 - 1945) and mother Catherine Nailen 1871 - 1914.

Catherine Ryan returned to the UK on the Duchess of Bedford arriving 2 December 1930 - - going to 29 b Block Fallin Stirling -
