James Henry ELLIOTT birth registered at Plymtpon, Devon mother's maiden name VEAL in 1856 (about 26 miles from Dittisham) baptised in Cornwood to James and Elizabeth, who were married in 1853, so not 'your' James.  ;)

Hi
We seem to be discussing the Elliott's of Dittisham.  Very confusing as there were two Elliott Familys in Dittisham in the 1800's.  Peter the bootmaker lived in Sarah Elliotts Cottage in High Dittisham.  This house is still there (2019).  Peter the boatman lived down on the river and the house is no longer there.

Peter the boatman married Susanna Anders (Andrews) mentioned in previous posts.
They had a number of children including Lavinia who had a son on April 30 1855 who was baptised on May 27 John Frederick Elliott.

Fred joined his cousin Peter Elliott in Australia during the goldrush and they both stayed here.

Fred was my Great Great Grandfather and I would dearly like more information on him and any family history from Dittisham.

Welcome to RootsChat Peter999

coola2 who started this thread looking at the ELLIOT family of Dittisham hasn't been online here since 2017, but hopefully they will still have the same email address and receive notification of your post. They may well have more information they could share with you.

It sounds like you know quite a bit already about the family. Is there anything in particular you would like help with? eg, do you need family information earlier than mother Lavinia?

For interest, there is a lovely diamond wedding anniversary article about William Henry LANE and Eliza (nee ELLIOTT, daughter of Samuel) in "the Western Times" on Friday,  Nov. 23, 1934 . She was daughter of Samuel ELLIOTT and Sarah BLANK,  the twin sister of Samuel mentioned in reply #1. In the article it mentions that Samuel jnr lived at South Embankment, Dartmouth and that his wife was a "claimant to the Allery millions" - whatever that was! Also, while living at Strawberry Valley, near Dartmouth, Eliza LANE served tea to the Prince of Wales and Prince Charles of Belgium when they were cadets at the Royal Navy College, Dartmouth.  :D

Happy to send you a copy of the article if you are interested.
