HOLLOMAN Immigration record to Australia
« on: Friday 19 May 17 03:15 BST (UK) »
This is the record of the Holloman(mon) family who arrived 7 Apr 1859 on the "Nimroud" at, I think Port Stephens. The birth of daughter Emma was registered at Liverpool. Mother's maiden name BIRD.  Marriage 1852 reg. in Bristol. Have also found an "Immigration Deposit Journal" record showing their sponsor as a John Williams. The first letter on some words is very fancy, but just makes it harder for me to read.

Could someone decipher the columns that I think are called the "Native Place & Country (or County), the Parents Names Column and the last one "Something in Colony"  please.
Have James & Jane, not last word, William & Mary and not the rest, and Liverpool England.
Thank you
HeatherR.

My best guess:

For native place, I can only make out Bristol for James and Sarah. Under Bristol, it almost looks like Somersetshire??  Emma's is a total mystery especially with Liverpool being listed under the column for her parents names. It sort of looks like "parents aboard"  ???

For the parents names column, I think it says " Parents names and if alive, their residence".

For James, it says James and Jane - dec  ( I assume they are deceased from this)
For Sarah, it looks it says William and Mary Bird at Stroud (?)

The last column could be "relatives in the colony"  as only Sarah is filled in with "father and mother at Stroud (?), Port Stephens".

For the little girl Emma i think it says "parents on board" and born Liverpool.

Thank you bbart &  orkrad  you have helped decipher the writing.
Thought it may be Somersetshire, but the rest was a mystery.
Appears that the information for Emma was put into the wrong columns as Parents on Board, (could that be 2 parents on Board?) seems right, born Liverpool. Will try to track down the family on 1841 & 1851 to find parents James & Jane, have had no success so far but will have another search.  Also try to find a Stroud somewhere around Port Stephens.
Cheers

I found James and Jane on the 1841 census.... you can't go by ages in your search, as adults were all rounded down to the nearest 5 yrs.  On Ancestry they are transcribed as Holliman.  If you still can't find them, let me know.

Here's a wiki article on Stroud:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroud,_New_South_Wales

Will go look for James and Jane on the 1851 and let you know if I succeed.

Edit... found Jane as a widow, with her youngest children in 1851.  I found her by searching the son Edward Holloman, born 1833.

bbart,
Thanks for the 1851, Bristol Castle Precincts sounds quite grand but probably wasn't, will check.
Have found on freebmd deaths for a James HOLLYMAN Mar 1850 Bristol 11 127 & a Jane HOLLYMAN Mar 1856 Bristol 6a 14.
James was a labourer so seems as if Stroud would suit the family and a Mary BIRD, (sister to Sarah?) was also on the Immigration Deposit Journals list along with a HEMERS family of 4.
sparrett,
thank you for the whole record all makes sense now.
