John Hayes Annear 1822 -1849
« on: Friday 19 May 17 04:22 BST (UK) »
Would appreciate help with this. G. G. Uncle, John Hayes Annear  of Gerrans. Known to be a Policeman in London.  Believe he may have been in Cornwall at the time of his death 24 March 1849, two days before the christening of his daughter Elizabeth.  Husband of Ann Hocking.
I have the Baptism, Burial, MI, and photo of headstone for John but would like to know more about this family. 1861 Census shows Elizabeth living with her grandparents at Polendra Farm.

Was John still in the police force at the time of his death.  If so did his death occur in the line of duty.?

Many thanks.

St Mary's Paddington parish register entry for the marriage on 16 November 1848 says his occupation is a labourer.

I just checked, Elizabeth was baptized a full year before the birth was registered.

Why would they go to London in the middle of this period to marry and he describe himself as a labourer?

There are Cornwall newspaper reports of a police constable John Annear being assaulted in the course of his duties in 1848 at Probus but successfully arresting the two involved.  I couldn't see a report of his death though.

The date of the baptism is incorrect on FreeReg, it's 1849 on the OPC database and on the register

Thank you  to all who responded to this request.

I will follow up on the marriage for John Hayes now that I have a lead as to where it occurred.

Being in New Zealand  I am not very familiar with the sources for English Newspapers.   Would anyone be able to tell me where I might be able to find a link to the newspaper article mentioned?
I will also investigate getting a copy of the Death Certificate.

I knew there usually some sort of memorial lists for policemen killed in the line of duty and  wondered if such a list existed from Police in Cornwall.  I looked at the one for London Metropolitan Police but he was not listed there.

to get a copy of the death cert, you need to order from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Don't order via a commercial site as they charge rather more than the GRO.

Newspapers are available via Findmypast and British Newspaper Archive. This is very early days for police forces. If he had died in the line of duty, it would be in the papers and it isn't. It didn't even get a mention in the West Briton that I can see, search available online
