Same Soldier in Two Images?
« on: Friday 19 May 17 23:10 BST (UK) »
I've been trying to figure this out for some time, but am always second guessing, etc.

A Virginia soldier I believe to be William Chatten (Chattin) of the 38th Virginia. He enlisted into State Service in May of 1860, and then he took the identified image in October of 1861 before he was mustered out for illness.

1) Unarmed and what I think is a post from 1860

2) Armed, and from October of 1861

Many thanks,
Mark

Wow they are really cool photographs!  I initially thought they looked very similar although the unarmed soldier looks to be fuller of face so I was not 100% convinced. However on closer examination they share a peculiarity that convinces me they are the same man - their ears are at markedly different heights. They also seem to share a slight dimple/unusual chin shape? It's more obvious on one image but it's there on the other as well.

I initially thought not but checking the facial features against each other, nose and mouth shape they do look to match.

I  thought he looked quite a bit younger in 2nd photo but he could just be a thinner

Thank you all. The armed image is about 1 year later after joining the army. So he should be thinner, having lost weight due to being "sent home on furlough- unfit for duty." I think this accounts for the drop in weight. Considering that these guys weren't large men to begin with (size 36 to 42 was the usual issue size for most), small drops in weight (5 to 10 lbs), still accounts for 2.5-5% drop in weight. For me right now, that's going to be 5-10 lbs  off my 6' 190ish frame.

Any more solid evidence, would be greatly appreciated!

Before I read any replies I was convinced they were of the same person but to add to the ears, nose & mouth, the parting in his hair is obvious too.

I think a year + in the army would make him lose weight?

I did overlaps in photoshop, and also ran it through https://huddle.github.io/Resemble.js/  and I'm convinced beyond a doubt that it is the same man.

Before reading the other replies I thought they were the same man.
