Thank you for the reply. I'm a little new at this and appreciate your help. Is there any way to find out the birth place of Alexander? He is my great-great grandfather, and I would love to see where I am from. I know there is the area of Loch Morar, near Skye, where a large clan of Gillises lived.

You can look for possible baptisms on Scotland's Peoples website.    However I have looked quickly and can't see anything obvious unless as you suggest he was possibly a Gillis   On Family Search the death of one of Alexander's daughter's Annie does list Alexander's birth place as Invernesshire  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JXFK-2ZS

Edit -there are trees on Anc that suggest his father Alexander was born in 1773 in Morar but I can't see any sources
