Did Bernard McCabe become a priest at Subdiaconate College, Chester?
« on: Saturday 20 May 17 10:59 BST (UK) »
I have someone in my family tree who I think may have become a priest.  I found out at Tyne and Wear Archives that Bernard McCabe was born on 20 January 1910 and baptised at St John at Annitsford, Northumberland on 27 February 1910.  The baptism entry also records that he was confirmed Michael at Ashington in 1922 and entered Subdiaconate College, Chester on May 31 1945 (Brother Philip).  Does this mean he was going to train as a priest under a new name of brother Philip?  Does anyone know how I could best find out more?  I will be very grateful for any information.

In 1934 the Society of the Divine Saviour bought Christleton Hall about two miles from Chester. The term Salvatorians refers to members of the Society of the Divine Savior, a religious institute of the Catholic Church with priests, deacons, brothers, and clerics.

Hi, Christleton Hall is now part of Chester University.
It's Law College.

Hi, Christleton Hall is now part of Chester University.
It's Law College.

It is "The University of Law" and has been at Christleton Hall since 1974. It is not part of Chester University. The University of Chester Law School was established in 2004 and has close links with The University of Law at Christleton.

Hi stanmapstone & Maggsie,

Thank you both so much for the very helpful information that you have both provided.  I am extremely grateful. :)

I saw what appeared to be the words 'Subdiaconate College' on Bernard's baptism record, St John RC Church, Annitsford in Northumberland when I was researching my family tree at Tyne and Wear Archives, Newcastle upon Tyne.  I will now be able to investigate further thanks to you both.
Thank you too for taking the trouble to send the newspaper attachment too, this is most kind! :)

Sorry, I have not responded straightaway to both your posts - I am between working nightshifts.
