A couple of words from 1579
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 07:04 BST (UK) »
Not surprisingly, this document from 1579 is proving to be quite challenging!
It doesn’t help that it had been photographed in two lots side by side - the parchment must have been very wide.
I have done much of it, but there are some bits I can’t make out.

It is about Thomas Hyde alias Ward (as in line 2 in this extract).
This is very near the beginning of the document.

On line 3  it says:

‘thapp(er)tenances rentes [ren....... ] & [     ] with all houses .”

Also the same word appears in this second extract from later.

Any ideas?
Thanks very much

... rent(es) rev(er)sions & s(er)vices ...

The first letter s of services is a brevigraph s(er), as often found with p(er). It might be written with u instead of v, but they are pretty much interchangeable.

Many thanks Bookbox.
I have seen 'reversions' before in documents, but failed to see the missing (er) in the middle of this one!
Not see the brevigraph S(er) before though - I think the p(er) is much more common.

There will be more bits to come!  ;)

An example here, very like yours ...

As you say, p(er) is much more common, but this one is often found in s(er)vants, s(er)vices and related words.
