Farraday's of Rochdale
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 09:13 BST (UK) »
I have just returned from Rochdale, where I was doing research into my 3x Great-Grandparents John Farraday and Elizabeth Lord.  Both John and Betty were born around 1781 and got married in St Chad’s Parish Church in Rochdale on 13th July 1806.  John was buried in the “new” burial ground of St. Chad’s on 19th March 1831 and according to the “Inscriptions on Tombstones”, prepared by the Borough Surveyor’s Office in Rochdale, Elizabeth died on 12th September 1847.  Unfortunately there is no burial recorded for Elizabeth in the Parish Registers of St. Chad’s, on or after that date.

Can anyone suggest an explanation for this, or offer any reason why the burial should not be recorded ?  Most of the Headstones in the “new” burial ground were laid horizontally and the majority are now overgrown, so I could not read what might have been originally recorded on the Headstone of their Burial Plot P34.

To further complicate the matter, on the same Headstone it is recorded that Margaret, their daughter aged 1, died on 31st October 1835, which means that she was born three years after John had died.  Again there is no record of the burial of Margaret in St. Chad’s Parish Registers.

Jackie,

I have not found any registration of death for Elizabeth, (or a Betty), of any appropriate age, in the whole of 1847, either on the GRO Index or on FreeBMD.

Tina.

Garstonite and Emeltom,

Between you, I think you might have cracked it.  According to the St. Chad’s Burial Register, 1 year old Margery Farraday was buried in the “new” burial ground on 4th November 1825.  I suspect the date has been transcribed wrong, and the Headstone should read that she died on 31st October 1825 and not 31st October 1835.

Thank you.

Tina.

Ahh ...I see what you mean - yes Tina that looks very likely ...just connected with the death 31st Oct and burial 4th November - but they have transcribed 1835 instead of 1825 ...makes sense - yes (unknowingly ) we have cracked it - I was looking at Margery - you posted Margaret - and thought it may be the right girl
lets see what other members think - but I think your assumption to be correct - well done :)
