Jeremiah CROSS, Born Apr/May/Jun 1838, Turnworth, Nr. Blandford
« on: Sunday 21 May 17 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Jeremiah CROSS was born 1838 and christened at Turnworth, Dorset, on 01/07/1838.   His parents were James and Anne CROSS and the family appears on both the 1841 and 1851 Census.  There are no further entries or references, other than the fact he was imprisoned for 4 odd years between June 1852 and November 1856.

Can anyone possibly help with BDM details from 1856 onwards please.

Thank you,

BAC3

Doesn't it say 7 years transportation or am I reading it wrong?

Nothing else obvious over here so I would head overseas!

According to Dorset County Chronicle 01 July 1852, Jeremiah was given a sentence of 7 years transportation with a recommendation to be sent to Parkhurst Juvenile Prison.

The 7 year transportation sentence was commuted and he was released early in November 1856

Jeremiah, 18 and his widower father, James, 50 travelled out to Australia (NSW) on the Stebonheath in 1858 to meet up with Jeremiah's sister. They were described as of Tamworth, Dorset. James' parents are listed.

Good Evening Richard,

Excellent research, thank you very much.

The implication from your post is that possibly you are familiar with the family "down under."
Are you able to help with any more details ???

Sincerely

BAC3

I'm sorry of that was your inference, but I'm afraid I know nothing about the family in Australia. All I know comes from the document I attached above, which I found y searching online. The information on Jeremiah's sister is ion the right hand side of the post where it says she is called Jemma (?) Gray and lives in Port Stephens (NSW). This fits with the 1841 census where there is a Gemma, aged 15.

Jemima Cross married James Frampton in Turnworth in 1843. They emigrated to Australia on the 'Emigrant' in 1849.

James Frampton must have died as Jemima remarried Peter Grey in 1854.

I don't know what happened to Jeremiah but sadly James Cross and the whole Grey family seemed to have 'troubled the police' in 1870.
