Thank you very much, GR2, for this enlightening clarification.  :)

Thank you, Annie, for your remark about "Jonet". Yes, I've seen many such transcriptions, but was this actually a name or should they all be "Janet"!?

Can someone confirm that " att Syminton" does mean "at Symington"?

Many thanks,

Alan

Another curiosity is that it clearly says he was born on Tuesday 20 December 1681, but 20 December 1681 was a Saturday! I can't explain this.
This is to do with the changeover from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar, which took place in September 1752, when 11 days were 'lost' from the calendar.

Most modern ‘day of the week’ calculators are based on the Gregorian calendar, so when using these to calculate days of the week for years before 1752 you have to allow for those 11 days.

Instead, try this calculator, which gives you an option of entering dates in Old Style (= Julian) or New Style (= Gregorian).

I think you’ll find 20 December 1681 was a Tuesday.

I'm not sure if we had this changeover from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar in France, but for those who might not be aware of it, there was something almost as confusing after the French revolution, when they changed to the French Republican Calendar which had 10 days per week and completely different months. Extremely confusing. We have to at least be grateful to Napoleon for cancelling it.

Thank you very much, Annie. I guess that nails it. A Scottish variant.  :)
