Moorfield, Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne
« on: Monday 22 May 17 03:11 BST (UK) »
I have found a relative at the above address in 1911;

Moorfield, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (no number or Street name)  ???

George Lunn 49 (Ship Owner) with wife Charlotte (Reeves) 47

Children;

Winifred 1888
Charlotte Reeves 1889
George Ramsay 1890
William 1892
Jane 1893
Margaret c1898
Walter Noel 1900
Mary 1901
Charles Oswald c1904

They had 12 children born but only 9 surviving.

I haven't checked yet for any others than the ones I have so far.

I would like to know where this house is on a map please?

It's rather large with 12 rooms!

I can't find it on google or any maps I've looked at but I'm not the best with maps  ::)

On the census pages, next to the left is Cedars, Gosforth
This property Moorfield
Then on the right side is Beechcroft then Brookfield then The cottage, Brookfield, Gosforth

I'd be so glad to see what this place looked like as the only thing I can find is a Care Home;

https://www.carehome.co.uk/carehome.cfm/searchazref/20004502MOOA

Any help appreciated.

According to the 1911 census Moorfield was in this area https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/423856/566922/12/101116 south of Beechcroft
The Summary Book has in order of schedule Cedars, Moorfield, Beechcroft, Brookfield, Brookfield Lodge, and Park Villas, which you can see on the map.

This is the modern map https://goo.gl/maps/7bmUs9DHfTo
It looks like the Moorfield House Care Home is in the same location, but may not be the original house.

This is Google Street View of the Moorfield Care Home https://goo.gl/maps/Px4csJKjjWw it might be a modern building built on the site of the original building, but if not then it was a large property.

I used to live just around the corner from there - I live a little further north now.

Today, and since the 1960s when I first lived in the area, Moorfield was a street with large 3-4 storey terraced houses on the north side and an offshoot of the Town Moor and allotments to the south.  Some of the houes are still single occupation but others are divided into flats.

A map to show where it is located:

Strange - I've always known it s a road - the house/residential home is on the other side of the the A1.

As I'm local to the area, I'll go have a mosey around this afternoon, with camera  :)

PS - it's not far from my dentist's!

Moorfield is the name of a house,(In this case) not a road or street. It is nothing to do with the (Moorfield) street you link to.

Stan

Please read my last post - Moorfield is both a house and a street.

i've been looking at the 1901 and the house was probably  the same as Annie found was a Care home. Also note that I'm going around this afternoon to investigate. I live about 1/2 mile away.

Annie - you say:

  Do you mean children or George Lunns?

I've found  a George Lunn in South Shields on the various censuses - same age.

This is Google Street View of the Moorfield Care Home https://goo.gl/maps/Px4csJKjjWw it might be a modern building built on the site of the original building, but if not then it was a large property.

Looking at the property to the right of the Moorfield Care Home, (looking from the road) i.e. 4, Kenton Road:  the name on the extreme left-hand gatepost is 'Cedars' and this fits exactly with the name of the house next door to 'Moorfield' in the 1911 enumerators book.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01k50/

A google search reveals at the next one down the road (i.e. 2 Kenton Road) is also known as The Poplars, which also fits with the 1911 Enumerator Book.

These two properties appear to be much older, so perhaps give some flavour of what 'Moorfield' might have looked like  :-\
