Were Joseph and George interchangeable names?
« on: Monday 22 May 17 04:16 BST (UK) »
Following what looks like a traditional naming pattern, until I get to Joseph who should technically be a George.

Were these names interchangeable? Angus or Kincardineshire?

Thanks, Jill.

Don't think so Jill. Could have been the parish minister a relation or a buddy!

Thanks Skoosh. I may have the wrong family. I will post what I have when I get a chance to review my tree and see what others think.

Have you come across this site www.whatsinaname.net/ A brilliant site for checking on first name variants with a strong Scottish bias  ;)

Some reference to George/Joseph here www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=george  Not sure how that fits with what you are seeing.

Thank you Monica. Fantastic site, I'll be saving this to bookmarks for future use.

Noticed the Geo/Joe thing. Seems like it could be a thing, but not too common generally.

It relates to George Wyllie and Ann Dick. I can't find any details of their marriage anywhere in Scotland.

From what I can find out they had the following children;

Jean b.1790                       Bervie
Elizabeth b. abt 1800          Ireland
Agnes b. abt 1802              Dublin, Ireland.    (direct ancestor)
Betty/Bette/Beattie ?

Found some of them on FreeCen.

I have Agnes Wyllie or Valentine on various census, each one says Dublin, Ireland for place of birth.

George Wyllie and Ann Dick obviously started off in Scotland given Jean's birth in Bervie then returned later. I wonder why they went to Dublin sometime between between 1790 and 1800? I cannot find anything in the Irish searches I've done in relation to Agnes or Elizabeth there.

Agnes Wyllie married James Valentine in 1828 in Fordoun, Kincardinshire.

They had the following children and it was here that I started looking at possible naming patterns, or at least some semblance of one.

Elisabeth b.1830      Marykirk   (direct ancestor)
John b.1833            Marykirk
William b.1836        Marykirk
Helen b.1838          Marykirk
Joseph b.1842         Marykirk

Lack of the name George here.

Nb: Some of the births are registered as "Vallentine". There was another Joseph Valentine born in Marykirk. Though he was 1841 but close enough to potentially cause issue. Which it did for me in fact.

The reason I was asking was to wonder if perhaps George Wyllie was perhaps known as Joseph previously.  Really struggling with George Wyllie and Ann Dick. They may be ghosts.

Thanks,

Jill

My personal view would be no, never but who knows  :-\

Back then gaelic would be spoken I would assume i.e. Seoras & Ioseph would not sound the same or similar just as they don't sound the same or similar in English today.

Jill, in one of your other posts on the family, you also commented on the name Beattie for one of the daughters. I think this is a variant for Beatrice www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=beattie

From what I can find out they had the following children;

Jean b.1790                       Bervie
Elizabeth b. abt 1800          Ireland
Agnes b. abt 1802              Dublin, Ireland.    (direct ancestor)
Betty/Bette/Beattie ?

Potentially another son, William  b. c. 1794 in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire. Supposedly died 1858. Wife Margaret Wood. Hopefully that 1858 death reg would let you confirm. This is from online family trees on A/try.

Good lord, my memory is terrible. Never know whether I'm coming or going. My problems is that I investigate so many lines at once that things get muddled. Not good, but I can't help myself.  ;D

I have a sub to An*try, and have viewed the William Wyllie's death cert. Does confirm that he is a child of George Wyllie and Ann Dick. Again, he's mentioned as a Tailor here.

Thank you for the info. For some reason this hadn't popped up as a "hint" before.

Regards,

Jill.
