German document I can't read or understand? Help!
« on: Monday 22 May 17 10:05 BST (UK) »
If I could read the text in this document, I could use Google translate, but I'm finding it difficult to make out the handwriting.

Can anyone please help me with it? I think (and hope) I can detect that it relates to a Joseph Kuss and would love to know what it is and what it says.

My German is very rusty ( GCE O level 50 years ago) but it looks like the 1899 birth certificate of Barbara daughter of Joseph Kuss  and his wife Carolina Kuss, born Dratwa.

I can see where you're looking on the form 'ShaunJ'. I'll have a play with those words. Looks like it may match a location in old Prussia - Kolbnitz.

Thanks again!  ;D

It's Kolpnitz.

"In 1742 Radlau became part of Prussia and in 1816 the district of Rosenberg OS was assigned. From 1853 the area was owned by the Prussian royal family. The western part of the village is the former colony of Kolpnitz (82 inhabitants in 1861), which in time developed into Radlau."

It's the birth certificate of Barbara Kuss born at 10pm on 30th November 1899 to Karolina Kuss (born Dratwa) and Josef Kuss, a colonist, who was the informant. Both parents were Catholics.

The place of birth is Kolpnitz, which was a colony in the community of Radlaw (Polish spelling Radłów). It was in Upper Silesia, just inside the border on the German side.

Here's the German Wikipedia page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radlau. If you right click on the page in Google Chrome, you can translate it into English.
