Passenger list/emigration records for Elizabeth W Witham
« on: Monday 22 May 17 11:20 BST (UK) »
Help needed to find emigration/passenger list information for Elizabeth Williams Witham, born 1857 Liverpool, who emigrated to America in 1871, (date from 1910 US census). She would have been about 14 or 15, and it's quite possible she may have travelled with her mariner father Robert Witham, who was a first mate in the merchant navy.  I have found her two marriage records in the States to Oscar D Knorr and George W Robinson, I am just trying to fill gaps between 1871 and her first marriage in 1879, Burlington, New Jersey.

There are very few passenger lists, from England, before 1890.

Your best bet is to search on the USA side.

did she go to Georgia in the USA - the Hewitt family ??
1871 census in Liverpool
Mary A Witham aged 36 b Ireland
Elizabeth Witham b 1857 aged 14 Liverpool
Annie E Witham b 1859 aged 12 Liverpool
James Hewitt aged 25 b Georgia USA - Visitor
Harriet Hewitt aged 15 b Georgia USA - Visitor

I wonder if these two visitors are somehow related to Mary ?- did her sister go to the States and marry a Mr Hewitt ?
anyway - maybe they went with the Hewitts when they went back to the States - after 31st March 1871 which is the date of the census :)
ADDED
IN 1861 Census she is living in Crompton Street aged 4 as Lizzy Williams Witham with her mum Mary and sister Annie aged 2 and 2 lodgers in their 50's one being Patrick Clark from Ireland - possible her uncle

Thanks, yes, that is Robert's marriage to Elizabeth Witham's mother Mary Clark. It's quite possible she may have gone the States along with her mother and younger sister Annie because I can't find either of them after 1871 in Liverpool.  But it looks like Robert as a then widower, remarried in 1883 to a Frances Lloydd, and he is now a labourer and not a mariner, unless he changed or lost his job. As for the Hewitt's, that's interesting, I couldn't make out where they where from on the census as it's so faded. I have checked for any other sisters, but it looks like Robert and Mary only had 2 daughters, unless it's one of Mary's sisters from Ireland. I'm just assuming Elizabeth did not travel alone being so young. It would be interesting to learn what she was doing between 1871 and 1879 when she wed Oscar d Knorr from Pennsylvania.  I was hoping that the  1880 Federal US census would reveal some more information but I can't find them. It's becoming quite an intriguing story to say the least...
