Dyson family in Diss, possibly from Suffolk?
« on: Monday 22 May 17 13:04 BST (UK) »
I'm studying a group of Dyson family members, mainly in Diss.

My starting point is one "John Dyson", who owned a brewery, and who died in 1833, and had the decency to leave a will.

From the will, I know of the following siblings, who I have managed to find some possible Birth/Death dates for

Thomas - 1768-1849
Elizabeth - 1769-1844
John - 1771-1833
Sarah - 1771-1853
Dorothy - 1774-1830

Elizabeth married the semi-famous Meadows Taylor in Diss, and John left the brewery split
between his brother Thomas, and his Bro-in-law, Meadows Taylor, creating the Taylor & Dyson Brewery.

At John's marriage to Mary Wilkin in Norwich, 1801, and Elizabeth's marriage to Meadows Taylor, at Gunton, Norfolk, 1793, there is a common witness, an Edward Dyson. He is not mentioned in John's Will.

I suspect Edward of being the father of the siblings.

I have NO BAPTISMs for the siblings (all birth dates are calculated from age at death), and no death for Edward.

I have a "possible" hits for Edward;

Marriage to Elizabeth Wright, Diss, 1764, Edward Dyson listed as Widower of Stowmarket (FreeReg)

Does anyone know (or can find) any more about the family's origins?

Possibly a false alarm on Suffolk - I have Edward Dyson (Dyfon) as a member
of the Diss Association against Horse Stealers in 1778.

Back to Suffolk!! - he married an Elizabeth Wright in Diss in 1764, but gives his parish as Stowmarket.

So I suspect they lived in Stowmarket until 1778.

Edit; no relevant baptisms shows on FindMyPast's baptism index. :-(

I may be looking in the wrong registers - the Dysons, Taylors and Coldhams were all leading dissenters.

Have found baptisms of 2 of the siblings, plus the burial of another child - I agree that the parents are Edward and Elizabeth (nee Wright).

Elizabeth bp.8/4/1769 Palgrave Presbyterian (Diss), Suffolk dau. of Edward and Elizabeth
Sarah bp.7/9/1771 Octagon Presbyterian, Norwich, Norfolk dau. of Edward and Elizabeth

George Dyson b.1775, bur.14/3/1776 Diss, Norfolk, son of Edward and Elizabeth

No doubt the other 3 siblings baptisms are in other Presbyterian registers not yet available online.

Edward Dyson aged 86 (bc.1726) buried 10/6/1812 Diss, Norfolk (cannot find burial for his wife Elizabeth).

I wonder if this is the baptism of Edward knowing the family were non-conformist:

Edward Dison bp.13/11/1725 Great Meeting Independent, Kettering, Northampton.   (certainly no baptism for an Edward in Suffolk or Norfolk).

Elizabeth Dyson, wife of Edward Dyson, late Wright, buried 24/3/1804 Diss aged 64 (or 69 - hard to read age).

Norfolk Record Office
Will of Edward Dyson of Brockdish 1812, ref Will register Chamberlain 104
It's on Norfolk Sources image 3&4&5 but is mostly too faint to read, perhaps you can download it and maybe reverse image it
Otherwise see if the Record office can make a better copy.
Bottom of one page (image 3) I can read my sons and daughters  ? Dyson, John Dyson, Elizabeth wife of Meadows Taylor, Dorothy Dyson.
When he wrote his will Edward Dyson was of Brockdish, no doubt the same man buried at Diss 1812.

NRO also has correspondence and papers of John Dyson buying the Magpie at Wortham 1802, Chequers -Wymondham 1802, Inns at Aslacton and Tibenham 1803 etc. etc.
They also have the partnership agreement between John Dyson and Meadows Taylor, plus much more.

That's great; thanks to you both.

Annette - which provider had those indexes? I'm with FindMyPast at the moment (£1 month offer :) )

EDIT; found them on both Ancestry and FindMyPast;
