Looking for Alice Lindsell
« on: Monday 22 May 17 13:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to locate any records on my Grandads sister Alice R Lindsell (middle name possibly Reavely).

The last record I have of her was arriving in New York on 26 Jan 1950 from Southampton UK. The arrival record states 'In transit to Canada'. She was 21 (born 1929).

I heard she married but have been unable to find any records.

Any help gratefully appreciated  ;D

Cheers, Mark.

Hi,

Unfortunately there are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  The latest available Canadian Census is 1921   As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago (up to about 1932 ish at present) and deaths 70 years ago.
Sometimes by using newspaper announcements, cemetery records, obituaries, telephone directories, http://www.canada411.ca/ etc it is possible to trace the families forward.
Really you need to know which Province Alice might have lived in.  Were there any other relations in Canada ?

No problem, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately what I posted above is all I know!

I'll try newspaper archives for marriages.

Cheers ;D

Run Kitty is the obituary expert and often comes up with something no one else can find - so fingers crossed she reads this one.

Found someone of that name but that appears to be the married name, so not yours sadly.  :'(

The corresponding outbound record from the UK gives her last address as 26 Lorraine Road, NY, even tho' it's supposed to list her last address in the UK, and her occupation as an agency booking clerk.  It would seem that perhaps she had been living in New York and had come home for a visit before leaving for Canada.

Thank you, might be an error on the record. I know her parents lived at 36 Loraine Road, Islington London.

Is there any chance that other family members could have sailed to Canada around that time (before or after her arrival)?  If so, perhaps their passenger lists could provide clues.

However, it might be wise not to state additional facts about the family, since family members could still be alive.  ;)
